My washing machine has thrown an error code on the display

Good afternoon. My washing machine has thrown an error code on the display and stopped mid cycle. It is about eight years old, out of warranty, and the code means nothing to me. The engineer I called wants a call-out fee just to tell me what it means, which feels absurd given the code is presumably documented somewhere. Is there a sensible way to look these things up before paying someone to read a display for me? It is a fairly common brand, nothing exotic, and the machine is otherwise in good condition.

Error codes are documented, usually in the service manual rather than the user guide that came in the box, which is why you cannot find it. Worth knowing the difference: the booklet you got tells you which programme to select, the service document tells you what the code means and which component it points to. Knowing the code before the engineer arrives at least tells you whether it is a filter issue or something expensive, so the call is better informed. One more thing worth doing before you call anyone: run the drain filter check the manual describes, that alone clears a surprising share of mid cycle stops. If it is not that, at least you have ruled it out and the engineer starts further along.
