Best Budget Laptop Alternatives to MacBook Pro?

I'm thinking about switching from my aging MacBook Pro but the new models are way out of my budget. Has anyone found solid mid-range laptops that don't compromise too much on build quality and performance? I mostly do web browsing, document editing, and some light video work.
