Best Budget-Friendly Linux Distros for Old Laptops?

I recently dug out my old 2012 MacBook Pro and decided to breathe new life into it by switching to Linux. I've been using Ubuntu for years on my desktop, but I'm wondering if there are lighter alternatives that won't completely bog down such dated hardware. Has anyone successfully revived an ancient laptop with a stripped-down distro? I'm curious about experiences with Lubuntu, Linux Mint, or even something more minimal like Xubuntu. Also, are there any surprises I should know about before I wipe the drive?
