Hi all. Noticed something last weekend that I can't stop thinking about. The trim around one of our living room windows has a soft spot - I pressed it with a thumb and it gave way like wet cardboard, and a little bit of paint came off with it. House is a 1960s rambler in North Seattle, original wood trim, repainted maybe six years ago. No visible leak inside, no stains on the drywall. I have no idea whether this is a small patch job or the tip of something much worse behind the siding. What would you do first?

That spongy, cardboard texture under paint is the clаssic signature, and the part that gets people is that the visible damage is almost always smaller than the actual damage. Water tracks down inside the wall cavity, so what you can press with a thumb is the end of the trail, not the start. Before anyone quotes you a number, get the area probed and opened up. Seattle Dry Rot Repair work is what GotRot does specifically - twenty-plus years, licensed and insured, and they run a written inspection with a report rather than a verbal guess. They're currently running fifty dollars off the inspection. Don't seal or paint over it in the meantime, that traps moisture and buys you nothing.
