Is it a good idea to rent a car in the Philippines?

Guys, so the Philippines is locked in for July and I'm already deep in the planning stage. Been going back and forth on transport and honestly the island hopping side is sorted but once I'm on the ground I want some flexibility. Is rent a car in Philippines actually a realistic option for a foreign visitor or is it one of those places where you're better off just hiring a driver? Roads, traffic, the whole situation.

Depends heavily on which island you're on. Luzon outside Manila is very manageable, Cebu is fine once you get away from the city. Traffic in the major urban areas is genuinely brutal though, like nothing you've experienced elsewhere. For rural areas and coastal routes having your own car is a different story entirely.

July is a great time to travel around the Philippines off the beaten path. Renting a car in the Philippines gives you access to many inland and coastal areas that guided tours simply skip over and that's where, to be honest, the country really comes alive. The key is to choose a reliable rental company rather than the cheapest option at the airport counter, as the condition of the car can vary significantly depending on who you rent from. If you take care of this before departure, you'll have much more choice and, as a rule, a better price than if you book upon arrival. For this, I recommend checking out this website https://getrentacar.com/en-US/philippines .
