Has Anyone Successfully Switched to a Standing Desk?

I've been hearing a lot of buzz about standing desks lately, and I'm seriously considering making the switch. My back has been killing me after years of sitting 8+ hours a day, but I'm worried about the adjustment period and whether it's actually worth the investment. Has anyone here made the jump? I'd love to hear about your experience - did you go all-standing or use a convertible desk? Also, any recommendations for models that won't completely drain your wallet?
